In 1966, Vermont did indeed have a total of 81 ski
areas, big and small, scattered around the state. This year represented
the peak in Vermont in terms of number of areas, and the number slowly
dwindled over the years to a perhaps a couple of dozen today. There
are many reasons for this decline, including Vermont's environmental
Act 250, which curtailed both expansion of areas and the development
of surrounding areas.
