Founded in 1885, the Rock of Ages Corporation went on
to become the world's leading granite quarrier, and today quarries and
manufactures a number of different kinds of granite, including Barre
Grey, Bethel White, Salisbury Pink and American Black, from sites across
the United States. Their visitor center, the "Tourism Division
of Rock of Ages Corporation," is the starting point for a number
of different opportunities to get better acquainted with the industry.
The first is a simple
self-guided tour, which starts with an introductory video on quarrying
and manufacture, after which you can check out geographical displays
or buy granite and other stone-related gifts. Visitors can also
stroll out behind the Visitors Center to view the inactive Rock
of Ages Quarry. A nearby manufacturing plant is also available
for touring. There is no cost for these, and hours run May 1-October
31, Monday through Saturday (8:30-5) and Sunday (12-5), with special
Fall hours Sunday (8:30-5:30).
Narrated tours are also available, where you can
take a guided shuttle tour out to an active quarry and get a firsthand
view of contemporary quarrying methods. These are available June
through mid-October, Monday through Friday (9:15-3) and cost $4/adults,
$3.50/seniors, children 6-12 $1.50.
Visitors to their Website
can take a virtual tour, get information on group tours, purchase
granite gifts and much more. Rock of Ages is located near Barry
in Graniteville, and can be reached at 1-877-255-7626.
