The Missisquoi
National Wildlife Refuge was established in 1943 to provide
recreational activities "consistent with the primary goal
of protecting and managing wildlife habitat." Its 6338 acres
are located two miles northwest of Swanton on the eastern shore
of Lake Champlain and include most of the Missisquoi River delta.
Bird-lovers will be particularly drawn to the Refuge
due to the large number of migratory birds that it attracts. The
Refuge sports 200 nesting structures and plays host to ring-necked
ducks, mallards, black ducks, green winged teal and other species.
It also contains the Shad Island Great Blue Heron Rookery, one
of the largest in Vermont.
The Missisquoi National Wildlife Refuge is open
year round from dawn to dusk. |
