Formerly a CCC camp in the 1930's, Camp Meade today exists
as a window back to the Depression and World War II eras. The museum
features more than twenty-five indoor and outdoor exhibits, allowing
visitors to listen to FDR Fireside Chats, view the Japanese attack on
Pearl Harbor, see authentic military vehicles from the Korean, Vietnam
and second World Wars (rides are available on Saturdays for an extra
charge) and much more.
As you pour over photographs,
audio and video clips and the various displays, period music from
groups like the Glenn Miller Band strengthen the feeling that
you are visiting another time. If you wish to take the experience
further, consider dining on 30's and 40's fare at the USO canteen,
visit the army/navy gift shop or stay in one of the on-premise
cabins. Cabins start at $42/night (2002) and offer access to a
swimming pool and unlimited museum visits.
The Camp Meade Victory Museum is located five miles
from the State Capitol (Montpelier) in Middlesex, Vermont. As
might be imagined, they offer a unique educational experience
that they have tailored to welcome school groups (complete with
trivia packets for each student) and bus tours. You can reach
them at 802-223-5537 for more information. Consider checking in
with their Website
too for more information on the museum. While there, you can also
arrange to donate items to the museum or leave reminiscences.
