Dedicated in 1859 as
the third statehouse for the state, the current Vermont State
House continues to be one of the oldest and best preserved in
the country. Indeed, both the House and Senate chambers are the
oldest legislative chambers still in their original condition
in the U.S. Not a bad feat considering that Montpelier is the
smallest capitol city in America.
The Vermont State House is open year-round, Monday
through Friday (8-4). Free guided tours are available on the half-hour
from July through October, and groups and school tours are welcome
(call 802-828-2228 for more information). There is also a gift
shop on the premises.
Those looking to visit the Vermont State House online
will find a wealth of information, including the building's history,
art and sculpture and more. |
