The Old First Church
in Bennington is one of the best known, and one of the first,
churches in the state. It was designed by Lavius Fillmore, built
in 1805 and dedicated in 1806.
The church is an excellent example of early colonial
architecture, and the adjacent cemetery serves as the final resting
place for such notables as Robert Frost and the seventy-five soldiers
who dies at the Battle of Bennington.
The Old First Church holds such a prominent place
in Vermont history that in 1935 the Vermont legislature designated
it "Vermont's Colonial Shrine."
