The Old Constitution House

Once simply Elijah West's Windsor Tavern, the Old Constitution House gained its notoriety when it became the site where Vermont's first constitution was adopted on July 8, 1777. The Constitution established Vermont as a separate Republic, and it remained as such until it joined the United States as the 14th state in 1791.

The building itself had quite a colorful history after that momentous event. It was a tavern until 1848, then housed shops, a tenement house, warehouse and more. It even moved to its present location on Main Street. In 1901, efforts were first begun to try and preserve the building, and in 1911 the Old Constitution House Association took over the deed and maintenance duties. The deed was finally transferred to the state in 1961. Today the Old Constitution House features period rooms, historical pieces and more.

The House is open May through October, Wednesday to Sunday, 11-5. The cost of admittance is $2.50 for adults, and free for children 14 and under. Groups are welcome, although they request that you telephone them at 802-672-3773 prior to visiting.
