Located off Historic
Route 7A in Manchester, Hildene was the home of Abraham Lincoln's
oldest son, Robert Todd Lincoln. Hildene, which means "high"
and "valley", is a Georgian Revival style house
consisting of some twenty-four rooms with original furnishings,
eight fireplaces and gardens that are laid out to resemble
a stained-glass Gothic cathedral window. The grounds also
feature a number of nature trails for hiking and cross-country
skiing.
Hildene gets over 50,000 visitors a year during
its mid-May to end of October season. Admission rates vary
depending on what level of access you want, from simple access
to the grounds to taking one of the regular (every thirty
minutes) tours. See their Website
for more information on this, as well as a calendar listing
the many events that Hildene plays host to throughout the
year. These include craft fairs, an antique and classic car
show, summer youth programs and more. |
