At one square mile, Vergennes is the smallest chartered
city in Vermont. It is also the third-oldest in the United States. Located
six miles from Lake Champlain on the Otter Creek, the lake defines much
of what it is and was. It is the current location of Button
Bay State Park (so named for the button-shaped rocks one can find
on its shores), Basin Harbor and the Lake
Champlain Maritime Museum. Benedict Arnold build the fleet here
that he used to stop the British advances in 1776, as did Thomas Macdonough,
who used his fleet to defeat the British in 1814's Battle of Plattsburgh.
