Stowe, Vermont
Consider elevation: the Village of Stowe, at 743 feet, sits in a valley surrounded by the giants of Mount Mansfield (4393 feet), Hunger Mountain (3620 feet) and Mount Worcester (3286 feet). It's no surprise that a skiing tradition grew up around the area that has earned Stowe the title of "Ski Capitol of the East." Many skiing firsts have resulted here, including the first modern ski trail (built by the Civilian Conservation Corps in the 1930s), the first U.S. chair lift (built in 1940), and the formation of the National Ski Patrol (1938). The area hosts numerous resorts and lodges, including the Trapp Family Lodge (The Sound of Music), which is still in operation. Restaurants and shoppes abound, and in addition to the traditional winter and summer activities that the mountains provide, special events such as the Winter Carnival (January) and Stoweflake Hot-Air Balloon Festival (July) are big draws. -Year incorporated or chartered: 1763 -Unincorporated villages and settlements: Moscow See also: |
