Once known as the Rail City (a testament to the heavy
role the railroad played in the city's past), St. Albans has the distinction
of being the northnermost point of hostilities in the Civil War. On
October 19, 1864, twenty-two Confederate soldiers robbed every bank
in the city and then escaped over the Canadian border with just over
$200,000. They were acquitted in Canada (who felt that the rules of
war made such things as bank robberies fairly minor offenses and not
necessarily criminal), and only about 1/4 of the money was eventually
returned. Residents of the city were ticked at Canada for quite a while
as a result.
Fast forward to today, where St. Albans plays host to
a major port on Lake Champlain and offers attractions such as Burton
Island State Park and the St. Albans Historical Museum. Visitors
in April will get the chance to experience their annual Maple
Festival.
