Springfield, Vermont

map

Located at the junction of the Connecticut and Black Rivers, Springfield's past, nor surprisingly, was closely tied to the power the two rivers provided. In the 19th and early-mid 20th centuries, Springfield supported a sizable machine tool industry, a fact born out by some of the inventions that had their start in the town: gravel roofing, the jointed doll, kitchen mop and mop ringer, sandpaper and the first American adding machine to name a few. The machine tool industry is gone, but you can still visit the old downtown and view the powerful falls that once ran it.

Other Springfield attractions include the Eureka Schoolhouse (Vermont's oldest one-room schoolhouse) and the Springfield Art and Historic Center.
