Vermont's northernmost city, Newport started out as a
lumber town, becoming a well-loved summer resort prior to the great
depression. At the time, trains brought vacationers from Boston, New
York and Philadelphia to enjoy summer on the shores of Lake Memphremagog
(only three miles of which is actually in the United States). The city
is still well-known as a popular tourist spot, sporting a marina, community
boathouse and the Stardust Princess excursion vessel. The
Haskell Opera House and Library is also located here.
Events in Newport include Arts on Main and the Annual
