Newfane, Vermont

map

Newfane has rather an interesting history. In the winter of 1824, the town was moved board by board from its first location to the more protected valley a couple of miles away, site of its present location. The town today is a must-see for those with an interest in architecture or a love of Greek revival structures. A number of stately homes and other buildings can be found in Newfane, including the columned 1825 Windham County Courthouse (dubbed the "most handsome" county courthouse in the state), the Congregational Church, town hall and more. The Newfane Inn, the second oldest inn in Vermont, once was responsible for feeding the prisoners in the county jail it abutted, making the serving of time in Newfane a fine dining experience.

Other attractions include the Jamaica and Townshend State Parks, and the Windham Historical Society Museum. Those with an interest in antiques will find a number of dealers here, as well as the weekly (Sunday) flea market, which is the state's oldest and largest such event.

Lodging:

Four Columns Inn - Surrounded by a shifting palette of perennial blossoms and tree foliage, the Four Columns Inn is a "Greek Revival gem" (Yankee Magazine, 1999) that offers 16 luxurious rooms and suites - many with well-appointed details such as fireplaces and two-person jacuzzis.

Old Newfane Inn - The Old Newfane Inn has 10 very quaint rooms, all furnished with lovely antiques. Each room has modern facilities.

Rock River Bed & Breakfast - Located in the peaceful green hills of southeastern Vermont, Rock River Bed & Breakfast is a licensed, three bedroom bed and breakfast.

Restaurants:

Four Columns Inn - The restaurant at the Four Columns Inn, which draws people from near and far, is considered by many to be the finest in New England. Dignitaries and celebrities including Henry Kissinger, John Kenneth Galbraith, Mick Jagger, Tom Cruise, Michael Douglas, Paul Newman, Nicole Kidman, Ron Howard, John Irving and Will Ackerman have journeyed to the Inn to experience Chef Park's exceptional cuisine.

The Old Newfane Inn - In the long dining room, a heavy timbered ceiling, brick fireplace wall and pewter plates on the tables give a real feel of the 18th century Colonial era.
