Located at the southern tip of the Green
Mountain National Forest (and on Rt. 4), Mendon and its namesake
Mendon Mountain are a short distance from skiing at Killington and
Pico and the city of Rutland, and offers the lodges and shops native
to mountains and city (particularly Killington). It is located in
Rutland County.
Mendon was granted by the Vermont legislature in 1781
as the town of Medway. The name was changed to Mendon in 1827. Both
names were originally from towns by the same name in Massachusetts,
where many of the earlier settlers were from.
Located on the western slopes of the main spine of the
Green Mountains, the highest point in Mendon is the 3939-foot Little
Killington Peak.
