Granted in 1780 to a Rhode Island group led by Jonathan
Arnold, Lyndon was allegedly named for Josias Lyndon, a former governor
of Rhode Island and a friend of Arnold's.
For many years Lyndonville was a major rail terminus,
and the village reflects this with its streets lined with stunning
examples of Victorian architecture. Lyndonville is still largely into
manufacturing, being the home of, for one Bag Balm.
Lyndon is the location of both the private secondary
school Lyndon Institute and Lyndon State College, which is part of
the Vermont State Colleges System.
