Jamaica, VermontAs anyone to the south could attest, Jamaica is popular as both a Boston area name and as a section of Queens, in New York City. The name itself comes from the Natick word for beaver place. Most of Jamaica lies within the Green Mountain National Forest, and the town itself lies just to the east of Stratton and the Stratton Mountain Ski Area. In 1748, Jamaica was the site of a fierce battle between French-allied Abenaki and an English scouting party on its way to Fort Drummer that left dead on both sides.
