Franklin, Vermont

Franklin, located, oddly enough, in Franklin County, was granted by the Vermont legislature in 1789 to Jonathan Hunt and others. It was originally called Huntsburg, but the name was changed in 1817 to the same as the county. Both Franklins are named for Benjamin Franklin, although it's also possible that they are named for Franklin, New Hampshire, where some of the earliest settlers came from.

Mostly agricultural, Franklin is located on the Canadian border.

The main settlement, also called Franklin, was rebuilt after a large fire in 1925.

Lake Carmi, and a Vermont State Park by the same name, is located here.

Historically, Franklin was the staging ground for the Fenian Raids of 1866 and 1870. These raids into Canada were an attempt to advance Irish independence from Great Britain.

Unincorporated villages and settlements: E. Franklin
