East Montpelier is located in Washington County. It
was created in 1848 by the Vermont legislature when it was split off
from Montpelier.
Heavily agricultural, the town is made up of two villages:
East Montpelier and North Montpelier. The former was a stop on the
Wells River Railroad, while the latter was known mostly for its woolen
mills. East Montpelier is now largely a residential "suburb"
of Montpelier and Barre.
