Located in Rutland County, Danby was granted in 1761
to a group of men from Dutchess County, New York. It is thought that
the town was named for Thomas Osborne, fourth earl of Danby and Leeds.
Part of Danby lies in the Taconic Mountains, with the
highest point being Dorset Peak, at 3804 feet.
Danby is perhaps best known for its marble, which has
gone into the construction of many famous buildings, including the
U.S. Supreme Court building, in Washington D.C.
Danby claims two literary figures as its most famous
citizens: the poet Thomas Rowley and Nobel Prize winning novelist
Pearl Buck.
