Calais (rhymes with Dallas) is located in Washington
County. It was granted by the Vermont legislature in 1780 to Colonel
Jacob Davis and others. The name is of French origin, pointing to
the admiration for the French after their assistance during the American
Revolution (see also, Montpelier).
Primarily agricultural, its settlements include East
Calais, North Calais, Kents Corner, maple Corner, Pekin, and Adamant.
