Bakersfield was granted in 1787 to Luke Knoulton of
Newfane, who in term sold it to Joseph Baker of Massachuetts a couple
of years later, which resulted in the name.
Bakersfield was a regional education center in the 19th
century, home to both Bakersfield Academy and Brigham Academy. The
latter was started by Bakersfield resident Peter Bent Brigham in 1879.
Mr. Brigham would go on to found the Boston hospital that still bears
his name.
